Llama wool - a valuable natural fiber

Llama wool is a traditional, sustainable and natural fiber valued for its numerous positive properties. As a luxury fiber, it is sought after all over the world and is always well received due to its origin, its properties and its traceability in the production process. The timelessness of their products also makes them sought-after collector's items that are passed down from generation to generation.

One of the special properties of llama wool is its natural composition. It consists of proteins that contain only a very small proportion of lanolin and fat. This makes it hypoallergenic and is particularly suitable for people with sensitive skin. The fiber is durable and water-repellent, making it ideal for use in clothing or accessories. In addition, it has excellent insulation properties and has a temperature-balancing effect, which makes it comfortable to wear.

Another advantage of natural llama wool is its antibacterial effect. Bacteria cannot multiply on its surface, which means that it is naturally protected from unwanted germs. Finally, the fiber is biodegradable, meaning it is environmentally friendly and can be easily disposed of at the end of its useful life.

Fair fashion made from Argentine llama wool

The natural and wild natural fiber llama wool comes from the camelid family and is obtained in La Puna, Jujuy, Argentina. Fair fashion and tradition from the Andes are in harmony with nature and are particularly gentle on the skin and the earth.

The llamas live freely in the vastness of South America and are used to surviving in high, cold and dry areas. The producers from the Andes keep the animals in a species-appropriate manner and pay attention to their well-being.

Shearing of llamas is usually done manually using special scissors, although there are still places in South America where more primitive methods are used. Local specialists know the traditional techniques and shear the animals gently and carefully. Shearing typically takes about 20 minutes per animal and is performed every two years. In contrast to machine shearing, the hair remains long enough to protect the animal from temperature fluctuations and precipitation at the high altitudes of the Andes and thus ensure animal welfare.

The natural shearing of llamas contributes to the preservation of an ancient tradition and at the same time ensures the sustainability of the raw material. In this way, the Andes are protected as an important habitat for the llamas and the rural population is supported, who benefit from the llama wool as an important source of income.

Our supplier is a certified "B Corp" company that works with the Warmi Sayajsunqo Association to purchase llama fiber under fair trade conditions from producers in the Puna communities of northwest Argentina.
